to banish or not to banish
.1. Banishing a young person, forcing them to go to the unknown. In which they have to survive the cold nights, trying to get food, and build a shelter. Forcing a young person to an environment where they don't recognize and don’t even have the skills to survive. You are forcing a young person into a place where they don’t even have the knowledge on what to do! For crying out loud, they could get themselves killed. They are alone if the person gets injured who will be there to save them. There's nobody there to supervised the young person. They would have to teach themselves how to hunt, build shelters etc. The risks are high when banishing a young person. They could be sent a place where it's -8, a place where humans can get to the point where they can’t even move, in which they would die of extreme temperature if they don’t have to skills or equipment to survive. Overall, you think banishing a young person would help, however, you are just rising their life.
2."hmm, Is it good to banish a young person"? You are banishing a young person into a place where they don’t recognize and don’t have the knowledge to strive and survived. they are all alone in the unknown with no supervision. The young person was probably banished for their stupidity, however, the young person hasn't learned fully. On the other hand, an adult should be banished because he or she has no more second chances. In addition, the adult has more life experience than young people. A young people doesn't have that much experience in the wild and they probably didn't learn how to cook and hunt. So through time they would die of starvation. If the young people were put in a position where they had to fight or die, they would be in shock or scared to death to even fight. Unlike the adults, they would fight to get away. Why fight? They would fight because they might have a loving family at home and they might have a chance to change what they did.
3.Canada. The second largest country in the world. known for its extreme temperature. However, a place where it is cold but not too cold to the point where you freeze to death. A place where it is not that challenging for a young person to face. The type of place where it has food. In which the place has to be suitable for the young person to build a shelter. There are benefits for this type of environment for example. The young person will have to face the wild in which it is okay for a young person and a place where he or she can learn from their mistake. In addition, the young person can learn new things, like building a shelter, hunting, cooking etc. However, there is a disadvantage for this type of environment. If the temperature change, it can be fatal to the young person. In addition, the young person is in the wild, which there are animals and the young person can’t fight! Overall, this type of environment has benefits and disadvantages!

Britannia MIne!!
What happened?!?
- On 1904 a mine open in British Columbia from 1904 to 1974, a mine operated at the Britannia Beach named Britannia Mine. It extracted the ores of copper, lead, Zinc, gold, sliver, and cadmium. The mine was the biggest copper producer in the British Commonwealth. There was 210km of tunnel dug, and the vertical shafts stretch from around 1300m above sea level to around 650m below sea level. Through time, pollution from the mining was not required to take action, when the mine close there was no owner so the pollution got worse. Acid Rock Drainage(ARD) is a natural process that happens when metal sulphides are exposed to oxygen and water. Air and rain play a big part in ARD production. The biggest ARD producer is pyrite which is iron sulphide, others include chalcopyrite(copper ore) galena(lead) and sphalerite(Zinc) A chemical reaction happens that produces sulphuric acid and dissolves metal which is “BAD”. Both of which polluted the local environment when they get into the ground water and local water sources. It killing the marine life that roams off the coast of Britannia Beach and people were not allowed to go to Britannia Beach because during the mine life a pipe was installed near the 4100 portal which was where the ARD was pumped out to the ocean.
Why was it okay? |
why was it fixed? |
During this crisis, people didn’t know that this was a huge problem. However when people knew, the government would have said something to fix it, so the people would thing it was okay. In addition back then the ARD was not that lethal and was fixed when the government built a pipe and and a small dam to bring the ARD to the 4100 portal then was pumped into the ocean.
|
The Acid Rock Drainage was fixed because during the mine’s life the government made a pipe at the 4100 portal, in which pumped out the Acid Rock Drainage(ARD) into Howe Sound. However, it built really deep so people couldn't tell. So after the ARD was pumped out and into Howe Sound, as the ARD went into the water the marine life that roams off the coast of Britannia Beach were killed because the ARD was in the water. Soon after the Acid polluted the local environment when they get into the ground water and local water sources. |
How was it corrected?!
The acid rock drainage was getting worse when the mine shut down. As time goes on, 30 years later, in 2005 the government gave $30 million to EPCOR to build and operate the Water Treatment Plant under a P3 contract. Even though there were 210km of the tunnel, there were only ever a few mine entrances. They were blocked in a way that all the water is diverted to the 4100 level portal next to the water treatment plant. Capable of storing up to 430,000 cubic meters of water. At the 4100 portal, there would be an 8m thick concrete plug, outflow pipes, and a valve system carefully controls water flow from the mine to the treatment facility. The contaminated water and groundwater were collected on foreshores and pumped to the Water Treatment Plant.
The water is first treated with lime slurry, which is a mixture of lime and water and is in two reactor tanks. The alkaline lime neutralizes the acidic water, quickly raising the pH from 3.8 to 9.3. At pH 8.5, the dissolved metals naturally come out of solution, in which it turns into tiny particles. After that, the water is then fed into large clarifier tank where a customized, man-made polymer is added . This electrostatically attracts the metal particles, forming clumps that sink through the bottom of the tank. This is removed and the clean water is pumped out to Howe Sound. |
